C. William Jones

Bill Jones

Bill Jones has dedicated his retirement years to ensuring that his fellow retirees receive the cost-of-living adjustments and the health benefits their companies promised them.

During a conversation with a fellow NYNEX retiree, Bill, a former NYNEX upper-level management employee, realized that the company was no longer providing the cost-of-living adjustments it had once promised its retirees. After making a series of calls to the company's Human Resources department, Bill was concerned that NYNEX was not planning to make annual cost-of-living adjustments to the pensions of its retirees. Bill and former NYNEX colleague Ed Ward decided to take action if no cost-of-living adjustment was made by January 1996.

When no increase was made, Bill and several of his former colleagues formed a network of 1,000 NYNEX retirees and sent a letter to then NYNEX CEO Ivan Seidenberg (now CEO of Verizon Communications) informing him of how the company's decision to no longer provide cost-of-living adjustments would hurt them during what was supposed to be the twilight of their retirement years.

After receiving no response from the NYNEX CEO, Bill and other NYNEX retirees formed the Association of NYNEX Retirees, a group whose sole purpose was to encourage NYNEX to provide annual cost-of-living adjustments to the pensions of its retirees. After NYNEX merged with Bell Atlantic and then with GTE, the retiree organization became known as the Association of BellTel Retirees.

Most recently, Bill and the Association of BellTel Retirees, spearheaded a successful effort to give Verizon shareholders a nonbinding vote on the pay packages the company gives to its top executives. For more information on this success, read Company Man Wins Fray over Bosses' Pay.

In addition to his duties as president of the Association of BellTel Retirees, Bill is Chairman of the Board for ProtectSeniors.Org, a group dedicated to protecting retiree healthcare benefits. To learn more about the Association of BellTel Retirees and ProtectSeniors.Org, visit their web sites.
