A proposal in Congress would allow the creation of a commission that could sidestep the legislative process and make cuts to Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and other programs.
Tomorrow - Wednesday January 20th - the Senate will hear and vote on the Bipartisan Task Force for Responsible Fiscal Action Act of 2009 (S. 2853). This bill would create a closed-door commission that would have the authority to fast-track significant changes to some of the nation's most critical programs - without input from the American people.
Don't let the Senate use the cover of "fiscal responsibility" to create a commission that would bypass the normal legislative process. While fiscal discipline is important, a commission that has the power to cut vital programs with limited debate and no opportunity for amendments is undemocratic.
Today is a designated National Call-in Day to oppose the creation of the proposed fast-track commission. Join people from around the country - including organizations such as the Pension Rights Center, the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare, OWL - The Voice of Midlife and Older Women, Wider Opportunities for Women, and several other organizations - by voicing your opposition.
Here's what you can do:
Make a Call: Call 1-800-998-0180 and tell your Senators to vote "NO" to setting up the so-called Bipartisan Task Force for Responsible Fiscal Action of 2009 (S. 2853). Tell your Senators that you are opposed to having this Commission lead to back-door cuts in Social Security and Medicare. Use our web site to find out who your Senators are.
Sign the Petition: The Campaign for America's Future and the Frances Perkins Center have created a petition to oppose the commission. Sign the petition to make your voice heard on this important issue.
