Polls Related to Retirement Security
- Understanding and Managing the Risks of Retirement: 2007 Risks and Process of Retirement Survey Report (Society of Actuaries, May 2008). The 2007 Risks and Process of Retirement Survey evaluates Americans’ awareness of retirement risk, how their awareness has changed, and how their awareness affects management of their finances. The 2007 Survey included a new area of exploration—the phases of retirement.
- A Shift in How Americans Plan to Fund Their Retirement (Gallup, May 2008). Future retirees expect less from Social Security, more from 401(k)s, part-time work. While only 3% of current retirees say part-time work is a major source of their retirement income, one in five future retirees expect to use part-time work as a major source of their retirement funding -- twice the 10% who had the same expectation in April 2001.
- Fewer Americans Expect a Comfortable Retirement (Gallup, May 2008). Fifty-five percent fear they won’t be able to continue their current lifestyles. The percentage of those yet to retire who think they'll be able to live comfortably in retirement fell precipitously, dropping to only 46% from 53% a year ago and 59% in 2002.
- Many Americans Fear They’ll Outlive Their Money (Gallup, Feburuary 2008). More than half of 30- to 64-year-olds in the United States say they are worried they will outlive their money after they retire.
- What the Public Really Wants...on Retirement and Social Security (Century Foundation and Center for American Progress, January 2008). In this new brief from Ruy Teixeira's What the Public Really Wants...series, polling data consistently show that not having enough money for retirement is at the top of Americans’ economic concerns.
- Financially Speaking, What's Troubling Americans? (Gallup Poll, October 2007). Nothing dominates, but economic uncertainty and retirement savings register high.
- Financial Anxiety is Prevalent Among Americans, Even Affluents (Gallup Poll, May 2007). According to Gallup's annual Personal Finance poll, retirement savings is top concern, tied with college expenses as parents' top worry.
- American Worker Survey (Rockefeller Foundation, May 2007). A national survey on economic security recently commissioned by the Rockefeller Foundation from Yankelovich Research found that two thirds of all respondents would choose a job that guarantees health care and a pension over a job that pays more. The survey was conducted as part of the Rockefeller Foundation's American Workers Initiative.
