Million-Dollar Grant Awarded to the Pension Rights Center

WASHINGTON – Consistent with its goal of improving the lives of older Americans, The Atlantic Philanthropies have awarded the Pension Rights Center a $1,000,000 grant over 15 months. The grant will enable the Center to develop a comprehensive strategic plan, expand organizational capacity, and expedite the development of PensionHelp America – an Internet initiative of unprecedented scope. Founded in 1976 as an independent, nonprofit, nonpartisan organization, the Pension Rights Center is the nation’s only consumer organization dedicated solely to protecting and promoting the retirement income security of American workers, retirees and their families.

According to John R. Healy, chief executive officer of The Atlantic Philanthropies, the Foundation views the Center as a “national treasure that works tirelessly and effectively to ensure that older adults will have the income they need to live independently and to engage fully in society.”

As a nationally recognized advocate for workers and retirees, the Center works on a broad range of retirement income security issues. The Center’s National Pension Assistance Resource Center (National PARC) is taking the lead in developing a nationwide network of pension assistance services for older adults. With support from the U.S. Administration on Aging (AoA) and The Retirement Research Foundation, National PARC provides training and technical assistance for AoA’s Pension Counseling and Information Program, which currently consists of six regional pension counseling projects that provide free assistance to individuals in 26 states. PensionHelp America, an interactive web site, will be a key component of National PARC, offering comprehensive single-point-of-entry access to pension counseling and other services.

The Atlantic Philanthropies are dedicated to bringing about lasting change in the lives of disadvantaged and vulnerable people through grant-making. Atlantic focuses on critical social problems related to aging, disadvantaged children and youth, population health, and reconciliation and human rights. Programs funded by Atlantic operate in Australia, Bermuda, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, South Africa, the United States and Viet Nam.
